Families receiving Universal Credit are being encouraged to check whether their children are now entitled to free school meals following changes to the eligibility rules in England.
From the 2026/27 academic year, the earnings threshold has been removed for families claiming Universal Credit. This means that if you're receiving Universal Credit, your children may now qualify for free school meals regardless of your household income.
This change could mean that families who were previously not eligible because they earned above the old threshold can now receive free school meals.
Who could benefit?
If you receive Universal Credit and have school-aged children who aren't already receiving universal infant free school meals, it's worth checking whether they now qualify.
For example, a parent working full time who receives Universal Credit but was previously over the earnings threshold may now be able to claim free school meals for their children.
Once our child becomes eligible, their entitlement will continue for the rest of the academic year, even if your Universal Credit claim later changes.
How to apply
Free school meals are not awarded automatically. You'll need to apply through:
- Your child's school, or
- Your local authority.
