Keeping your home gas safe

We're proud to support the 16th annual Gas Safety Week, taking place from 14 to 20 September 2026. This year's theme, Take No Chances, is a reminder that when it comes to gas safety, small checks can make a big difference.

At Accent, keeping your home safe is one of our top priorities. We carry out annual gas safety checks and make sure any gas appliances we provide are maintained by qualified engineers. But there are also some simple things you can do to help keep yourself, your family and your neighbours safe.

 

What we're responsible for

We have a legal responsibility to:

  • Carry out an annual gas safety check in your home.
  • Maintain gas appliances that we provide.
  • Give you access to your gas safety record.
  • Fit carbon monoxide alarms where required and make sure they're working at the start of a new tenancy.

What you can do

Our annual gas safety checks help us make sure appliances are working safely and identify potential issues before they become serious problems. If we contact you to arrange an appointment, please help us by providing access to your home.

Anyone working on gas appliances, pipework or flues must be Gas Safe registered and qualified to carry out the work. Don't be afraid to ask to see their Gas Safe ID card before allowing them to start work.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas that has no smell, taste or colour. That's why carbon monoxide alarms are so important.

Test your alarm regularly and let us know straight away if it isn't working properly.

Take no chances if something doesn't seem right.

Signs that a gas appliance may not be working safely can include:

  • Yellow or orange flames instead of blue flames.
  • Black marks or staining around an appliance.
  • A pilot light that keeps going out.
  • Excessive condensation.
  • Error messages displayed on the appliance.

If you notice any of these signs, stop using the appliance if it's safe to do so and contact us immediately.

Vents and flues help gas appliances operate safely. Avoid blocking or covering them, as this can affect ventilation and increase risk.

Know the signs of carbon monoxide poisoning

Symptoms can include:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Breathlessness
  • Collapse
  • Loss of consciousness

If you think carbon monoxide may be present, open doors and windows, move into fresh air, call the Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999, and seek medical advice if you feel unwell.
