BBQ Safety Tips for a Safe Summer

With warmer weather on the way, many people will be looking forward to spending time outdoors with family and friends. If you're planning to use a BBQ this summer, it's important to do so safely.

BBQs can pose a serious fire risk if they are not used correctly, putting homes, neighbours and communities at risk.

BBQ Safety Tips

To help prevent fires, please follow these simple safety guidelines:

  • Only use BBQs outdoors at ground level – never on balconies or indoors
  • Keep BBQs at least 1–2 metres away from buildings, fences and other structures
  • Never leave a BBQ unattended while it is in use
  • Keep children and pets away from the cooking area
  • Keep water, sand or a hose nearby in case of emergency
  • Only use approved BBQ fuels and never use petrol or other flammable liquids
  • Ensure coals and ashes are completely extinguished before disposing of them

In an Emergency

If a fire starts and cannot be controlled safely, move away from the area immediately and call 999. Never put yourself at risk by attempting to tackle a large fire.

By using BBQs responsibly, we can all help keep our homes, neighbours and communities safe while enjoying the summer weather.
