Changes to Universal Credit LCWRA Payments from April 2026

As of 6 April 2026, there will be changes to the amount of money paid to people who are assessed as having Limited Capability for Work and Work-Related Activity (LCWRA). This will affect anyone newly awarded LCWRA after this date.

What is LCWRA?

LCWRA is a part of Universal Credit for people who have a health condition or disability that affects their ability to work. Right now, people who are awarded LCWRA receive an extra £423.27 per month.

What’s Changing?

From 6 April 2026, the monthly payment for new claimants will reduce to £217.26.

If you already receive LCWRA at the higher rate of £423.27, you will keep this amount and won’t be affected by the change.

If you are awarded LCWRA after 6 April 2026, you will receive the new, lower payment of £217.26.

What Do You Need to Do?

If you have a health condition or disability that affects your ability to work, it’s important to report this as soon as possible to make sure you receive the higher payment before the new rate starts.

Here’s how you can report your condition:

1.      Upload a fit note from your doctor to your Universal Credit account.

2.      Talk to your work coach about your condition.

3.      Request a Work Capability Assessment on your Universal Credit Journal.

Please note that there can be a three-month waiting period before LCWRA payments begin after you report your health condition or disability.

Why Act Now?

By reporting your health condition early, you may be able to complete your assessment before the new, lower rate comes into effect. This could help you secure the higher payment of £423.27 each month.
