Accent is celebrating a remarkable milestone for long-standing customer Wendy Dyer, who has spent 40 years helping to shape her community and influence housing services for customers across the organisation.
Eighty-three-year-old Wendy, from Peterborough, has lived in the same Accent home since 1986, when the property was newly built. Over the past four decades, she has not only enjoyed her home but has played an important role in ensuring customers' voices are heard.
During her tenancy, Wendy served on the Board when Accent was known as Nene Housing, helping to represent customers at the highest level and influence key decisions. She was also involved in some of the organisation's earliest consultation groups, giving valuable feedback that helped shape services and homes for future generations of customers.
Wendy's commitment to customer engagement extended across many areas of the organisation. She represented residents and customers on scrutiny and consultation panels, contributed to the development of kitchen and bathroom design choices, she was a voice at board level, and chaired the customer newsletter editing panel.
Drawing on her passion for writing, Wendy regularly interviewed new members of staff and wrote articles for the customer newsletters and magazines, helping to strengthen connections between customers and colleagues. She also supported Accent's popular garden competitions, taking part in judging entries and celebrating community pride.
Today, Wendy remains as committed as ever. She continues to act as the eyes and ears of her community, regularly sharing feedback and working closely with Accent colleagues. Most recently, she joined her Housing Partner, Melanie Ellard, on a neighbourhood walkabout to identify any issues and help ensure the local area remains a great place to live.
To mark 40 years with Accent, Wendy was presented with a bouquet of flowers in recognition of her longstanding contribution and dedication, which happened to be around the time of her 83rd birthday.
Wendy said: "I've loved being an involved resident with Accent over the last 40 years. It was never just about me though. I always felt that if I could use what I'd learned to help make things better, then it could benefit everyone in the community. Being able to speak up, support others and play a part has meant a great deal to me, and it's been a privilege to be involved."
Outside of Accent, Wendy is a devoted member of her local church, where she is known affectionately as 'Godgranny' by many of the children. She lovingly knits toys for every new child who joins the church community, a gesture that reflects the kindness and care she has shown throughout her life.
As Wendy celebrates four decades in her home, her story is a powerful reminder of the lasting impact that engaged customers can have in shaping communities, improving services and making a difference for others.
"I worked closely with Wendy during her years of involvement with Accent. Wendy really cares about her community and holding people to account. She has always been passionate about making sure customers are listened to and that services continue to improve." - Jill Jackson, former Head of Resident Engagement at Accent.
"Wendy is really proud to be an Accent customer and has always demonstrated this throughout her tenancy. Her commitment to her community and willingness to get involved have made a real difference over the years, and we're incredibly grateful for everything she has done." - Melanie Ellard, Housing Partner at Accent.
