Accent and SHINE support West Bowling community

On 10 March, Accent partnered with Bradford charity SHINE to host a Community Information Day in West Bowling.

The event brought together local organisations, support services and Accent volunteers to help residents access advice, support and practical help. Partners included Andy's Man Club, Groundwork and Living Well.

Residents were able to get help with money and housing questions, access the local Food Pantry and connect with services that can support them in the future. During the event, 15 visitors received laptops, helping them search for jobs, access services and stay connected.

One customer said:

“I’m going to use my new laptop to help me find a job. There’s not much work around here but this will give me more chance to find something. Thank you.”

Another visitor added:

“My son’s laptop has literally just blown up! We can’t thank you enough for this replacement. It means so much.”

Support agencies also highlighted the value of the event. A representative from Groundwork said:

“Thanks for inviting me today. I’ve made two referrals and I’ve given advice to lots of other people. It was definitely worthwhile and I’d like to come here again to help more people.”

Accent colleagues were also able to provide direct support. One local resident was helped to claim their state pension, which had not been applied for earlier. The claim will now be backdated, meaning they will receive £12,108.59, with their pension continuing every four weeks.

One colleague reflected:

“It was an eye-opening day. The work we did alongside all the SHINE volunteers was incredible. I hope we can do more events like this so we can give back to our communities.”

Working in partnership with organisations like SHINE helps Accent reach more people and provide support where it is needed most.

Accent has now secured £5,000 in funding to continue working with SHINE over the coming months, delivering more activities and support for customers and the wider West Bowling community.
