Why Choose a Career in Social Housing? | Accent Group

With the cost of living rising and more people struggling to find safe, affordable homes, social housing has never been more important.

It’s a sector where your work really matters. Every day, you have the chance to support people, strengthen communities and help create places people are proud to call home.

Making a real difference

Working in social housing is about more than buildings – it’s about people.

It’s about helping someone feel safe in their home, supporting families through difficult times, and giving people the stability they need to move forward. The work you do can genuinely change lives.

Kat’s story is a powerful example of this.

In 2024, Kat and her three children were living in a home affected by severe damp and mould. Despite repeatedly asking her landlord for help, nothing changed, and her children’s health began to suffer.

Determined to protect her family, Kat took action. She contacted Environmental Health and began learning about her rights. What started as a difficult situation soon grew into a passion for housing.

After working hard to build her knowledge, Kat gained certificates in Social Housing Management and Housing Support Officer training. Her confidence grew, and she became determined to help others facing similar challenges.

In September 2025, Kat and her family moved into their new Accent home.

She describes her experience as a “fairytale” and says her family are now happy and settled. Inspired by her journey, Kat hopes to build a career in housing and support others in the future.

A sector that’s always evolving

Social housing is constantly changing, with new laws, higher standards and a strong focus on improving services for customers.

From building safety to better customer experience, the sector continues to learn, adapt and improve. Working in social housing means being part of that progress and helping to shape better services for the future.

A wide range of opportunities

There isn’t just one route into social housing.

Whether your skills are in customer service, housing management, finance, communications, development, repairs, digital or people services, there are many ways to build a career in the sector.

It’s also a place where you can grow. Many people move between roles, develop new skills and build long-term careers.

A place where people care

One of the best things about working in social housing is the people.

You’ll be part of a team that cares about doing the right thing, supports each other and works together to make a difference. It’s a positive, purpose-driven environment where your work really means something.
