Meet Kat
In 2024, Kat was experiencing serious issues with her private rented home. Persistent damp and mould were affecting the property and causing health problems for her three young children, who developed ongoing coughs and breathing symptoms.
Despite sending multiple emails and asking her landlord for help, nothing changed. As her children’s health worsened, Kat knew she had to take action.
Taking Action
Kat made an official complaint to the Environmental Health team. An inspection found significant damp and mould throughout the property, and the case was escalated.
Determined to protect her family, Kat began researching landlord and tenant responsibilities so she could confidently advocate for her children. What started as a need to understand her rights quickly grew into a passion for the housing sector.
After studying hard and building her knowledge, Kat achieved certificates in Social Housing Management and Housing Support Officer training. Gaining these qualifications has strengthened her confidence even further and reinforced her ambition to work in housing and support others facing similar challenges.
As her knowledge developed, so did her confidence. Kat now feels empowered to stand up for herself and support others facing unfair housing situations.
A Fresh Start with Accent
In September 2025, Kat and her family moved into their new Accent home.
Kat describes her experience with Accent as a “fairytale”, highlighting the support she received throughout the process. She says talking about her new home still brings her to tears, and her family are now settled and happy.
Inspired by her journey, Kat hopes to pursue a career in housing. With determination, she says:
“I cannot give up.”
Given her lived experience, empathy and drive, she is determined to make a difference for others in the future.
