Accent Housing has been providing homes across the country since 1966 because we believe that everyone deserves a warm place to call home. Some of the properties we provide are sheltered housing which are apart of the independent living schemes for older people.
As a housing association, we’re asked plenty of questions regarding housing such as availability, eligibility, and benefits. That’s why we’ve created this article to tell you exactly that, plus what independent living is like.
What is Independent Living?
Independent living refers to the independent living schemes which are property schemes that house people aged 55 or over. These apartments, if they aren’t purpose-built, are adapted to accommodate the needs of older people.
These schemes feature a collection of self-contained apartments one-bedroom apartments which are suitable for couples, as well. Properties on the independent living schemes are also known as sheltered housing or sheltered accommodation.
The purpose of the properties’ design is to provide seniors with the freedom to live independently in their own flat but still offering support should they require it. For those that aren’t fully able to live mostly independently and need more hands-on support, then assisted living schemes may be more appropriate.
What is Independent Living Like?
Properties for independent living schemes usually feature a double bedroom, a spacious living area with a fully fitted kitchen, and an accessible bathroom that can be adapted into a wet room or walk-in shower room if necessary.
Apartments also offer additional security features such as grab handles, rails, and emergency pull cords. So if you’re in an emergency, like a fall for example, by pulling the emergency pull cord an alert will be sent so that we are notified and can send someone to help you immediately.
Every property within our independent living schemes have communal spaces where social events can be held. The social events may differ from property to property because it all depends on what the residents want. Some examples of community/social events that could happen are bingo, coffee mornings, and group trips.
These schemes are very ideal ways for seniors to make new friends and have companionship in order to battle feelings of isolation or loneliness which could lead to poor mental health. And they’ll get to live amongst like-minded people and gather in the communal lounge space for a brew.
Sheltered housing is suitable for those on a low income, as with all housing association properties. The weekly payments are more affordable, not to mention that the apartments really are great value for money.
We don’t just aim to make house-life easier; we aim to make everyday life easier. That’s why most of our sheltered accommodation properties are in some of the most ideal locations. Located close to shops and transport links, it’s easy for residents to get to and from places.
Who is Eligible For Independent Living Schemes?
Here at Accent Housing, we accept applicants starting from 55 and over, but some of our schemes allow applicants aged 45 and above. This is quite dependent upon the residents’ circumstance and their scheme, though.
Disabled applicants may be eligible so long as they can live mostly independently. Aside from needs and age, there’s some other criteria an individual must meet in order to be eligible.
An applicant may be eligible if they:
- Are homeless
- Do not have housing related debts
- Will not be subject to immigration control
- Have a low income
- Are not guilty of anti-social or illegal behaviour
