Most people are aware of the dangers of fire, but often think it won’t happen to them. The reality is that it can happen to anyone.
Most house fires can be prevented by taking a little more care to minimise risks in the home or by being more careful. In many cases, tragedy could have been avoided and damage reduced if smoke alarms had been fitted and working properly.
We fit smoke alarms free of charge in all our rented properties. If your home doesn’t have a smoke alarm, please contact us.
Follow these tips to reduce risks in your home
- Test your smoke alarms weekly.
- Take care when cooking.
- Plan an escape route and make a bedtime check.
- Don’t overload sockets.
- Make sure cigarettes are properly out.
- Close internal doors when you go to bed.
- Use candles carefully and with an appropriate candle holder.
Free Home safety Checks
Home fire safety checks are available to those who are most vulnerable in the community. This may include people who smoke or who have a disability or mental health problems.
To see if you or someone you know is eligible for a free home fire safety check, please contact your local fire service via http://www.fireservice.co.uk/information/ukfrs.
The visit may be carried out by firefighters who are operational, so don’t be surprised if a fire engine arrives at your home, or a dedicated team from the local Fire and Rescue Service. The visits are completely free.
