Youth MP sponsorship

Accent Nene has joined with Peterborough's other three main housing associations in sponsoring this year’s Peterborough Youth MP, Kamal Hyman.

Accent Nene, Axiom, Cross Keys Homes and Hyde Minster agreed to sponsor Kamal after he recently won an overwhelming election victory following a gruelling question time. Kamal is keen to work hard to promote and support youth issues and the housing associations, as sponsors, are looking to offer him placements with them all during the year.

Accent Nene’s chief executive, Andrew Williams, said: “I know that Kamal is keen to portray young people in Peterborough in a different light and he will no doubt deliver that message by example through his own dreams, drive and ambition.”

The housing associations are keen to make Kamal fully aware of housing issues for young people following recent national reports that the average age of first time buyers is now 37 years of age, making housing a real concern for young people.

The four landlords are also keen that Kamal becomes an advocate by learning more about the opportunities offered by a career in housing.

Kamal said: “I am very grateful for the sponsorship. It means a lot that these four housing associations can show their support to me and in turn help and support young people.

“Hopefully I will be able to help them to bridge the gap between them and young people, to raise awareness of housing issues, and make that first house more realistic for a wider number of young people.”

Kamal is taking the unusual step of taking a year off school so he can concentrate on the role.
